It's long and BLACK!

Well, I'm finally back into an almost real 4wd as of early next week

My very tired Subaru was written off by an obliging P-plater just before Easter, and the insurance payout has bought me this:

First job will be to rip the faggoty sidesteps off, then some lift.

How to you lift a Frontera?

Matte black paint half way up the doors - bugger the occasional minor panel damage, call it "clearancing".

Their biggest issue is their botoxed front suspension - no movement at all.

Re: It's long and BLACK!

It'll do the job for what I need for the next coupla years.

A couple of mods and it'll be OK for touring. Maybe a trip or two to some of the easier destinations in the High Country, the likes of Little Desert or Murray Sunset, etc. At least it'll get me further than the Forester would, and with a whole lot more room.

I might start an IFS flex thread, and see how many layers of gravity I can drive through.

My brother in law had one. Pretty good on road, plenty of power ect. Bit crap off road but it was standard and he never played with it.

We got caught in the snow many moons ago on the edge of Lake Eucumbene, the other BIR went up this hill in his Gutlux, did it easy, this one went up in the Frontera.....nearly got stuck......I thought, oh bugger track must be churned up now so I hit as hard as I could in the GQ and blasted to the top, coulda done it 2WD I reckon. To this day I dont really know if it was the car or him.

I think with a decent set of tyres and a locker it will be a good tourer.

Apparently they have a rear LSD, will prolly lock the front, give it some decent tyres, 2" lift and that'll be it. By all accounts they're reasonably capable, but these days I'm more inclined to tackle the milder stuff and let the pimple faces go sick on the heavy duty stuff.

They are tough, truck rear diff, truck gearbox and that 3.2 is as reliable as the day is long. Pity they didn't come with traction control, they would be a good jigger then.

Red, pink, not a lot of difference :finger: :D

Making slow progress. Now lifted enough for decent touring, scored an ARB winch bar for a hundred bucks, and found some Prado steelies for 14 bucks each.... Now for some decent rubber.

Chimpboy bought a silver one.

  I'm keen. Where to? Mrs is a little hesitant, depending on how extreme - she's still a bit of a nervous passenger.

Otherwise I'll bring my brother.

Re: It's long and BLACK!

Finally got to do a decent trip last week, just my daughter and myself. We did Sunset Country, Mildura, Adelaide, Goolwa/Murray Mouth/Coorong, Robe, then back into Vic to visit family, before heading home to Hellbourne.

Mopoke Hut 30 years ago. We used to spend a lot of time out there back then, often driving up for a long weekend. The poxy Zook in the background is my first 4by, before I did anything to it. Now my daughter has the bug, so I can see some more trips coming up.

Mopoke Hut now. Mildura 4WD Club has restored it. Quite a decent place to camp for the night.

Rare to see this fella in the wild these days. Funny, we met a group from Adelaide - Land Rover Register of SA members who reckoned there wasn't much wildlife out there. Must be fawkin' blind!
