Been thinking about it, but might be better off spending the money on more efficient appliances, e.g. updating ancient swimming pool pump and 0s hot water system.........

Spend money on updating power consuming appliances, if more cost effective IMHO.
The new 12v pool pumps are quite good I hear.

Is there a web site that explains solar in plain English?

Energymatters.com.au does sell products but the forum is open to everyone. Might as well use someone else's trial and error to your benefit.

1000a/h lithium @ 48v

Wow that is a big bank (38kw usable every night!!), around 5 times the size of mine. Batteries are expensive and panels are cheap! Better off over sizing panels and using a smaller bank. Our house is lucky to use 3kw over night.

I want the flexibility, with a baby and nabe a second down the track I want the wife to not have to rationalise using the washing machine but I'll look at the costs when I get a bit more serious.

The initial cabin will be 2kw and 260ah agm

Dudelux is in FB I'll stir him up if he doesn't find this lol

Re: "The Totaly Off Topic Thread"

What charge controller are you using? My system had a couple of Australian made Plasmatronics but decided to swap them out with a midnite classic (american). Much better for the money and flexibility.

Re: "The Totaly Off Topic Thread"

Undecided ATM but have had no issues with the plasmatronics pl20 in the bus. I only want charge capability anyway I'll monitor the system with a dedicated monitor.

I haven't decided if I'll split the inverter and charger but there is some economical joinable inverter chargers around now fully programable and some even have direct solar input though separate solar controllers is a bit if a fail safe.

I have a victron 12v120a 240v3000w inverter charger in the bus, I do like the simplicity of one unit doing both and 2 3000w units tied in gives you some redundancy.

Hows yours set up? Did you bother with tracking the panels? I'll be setting up on a north facing hill (bottom of) so I reckon id be stretching 10% gain from tracking

Re: "The Totaly Off Topic Thread"

I have a spare PL40 and PL60 along with all gear and shunts needed to link and monitor them if you want. The PL's are sturdy but no where near as good as the midnite in terms of performance (PWM V MPPT), user interface, ability to link together and function. My PL's always had trouble working together and were easily affected by AC cables. The midnite has quite a few more functions to properly charge batteries and end the charging based on how full the battery actually is rather than time based charging of the PL.

I currently have 1 x Midnite classic 150 hooked up to 14 x 170W North facing Schott panels (tilted to 25 degrees) as well as 4 x 190W NW facing Chinese panels tilted at 45 degrees. I added the NW panels to give me some extra hours and they work great and despite what people will tell you DO NOT fight the other panels (they have similar specs).
With panels being so cheap trackers are a waste of money and are easily damaged in high winds (house is on a hill). You are much better off just spreading your panels NE, N and NW to capture the full days sun. At this time of year my N panels get sun by 7am so i haven't bothered with NE facing. I will probably add another 4x190w to the north to help it run bigger loads during the day and summer when performance drops a bit. You can overdrive the Midnites by 50% with no troubles as they will just cut back the input voltage and sit at their max power output. Much cheaper than buying more controllers. The midnite will do 4.8kw at 48v so you would only need one controller. They can be also hooked up to the internet and monitored from anywhere with 10 minute logging intervals as well as being hooked up to your LAN and monitored directly through various apps.

I just have a 24v SMA inverter charger that will output 3.2kw all day, 4.2kw for 30 mins, 4.4kw for 5mins and 5kw for 1 minute. It also charges via the back up generator at 140 amps! The SMA controls the generator 100% and kicks in at a set SOC and will also kick in to cover loads bigger than the inverter can handle or if its straining the batteries too much. Basically set and forget. It also only consumes 30w on standby which is a major factor as the cheapies use a lot more. I wouldn't skimp on the inverter as the last thing you want is power shutting off when your not home and your mrs is in the middle of something (shower lol).

Morning, welcome back dudlux, trying to work out how to become a primary producer. Seems like hard work.

Olive trees Maybe? Eco resort thing pays nothing much, most properties don't have river access so camping would be down.

We had that at work today. Big IT update scheduled 00:01-03:59.

It was still FUBAR at 07:30 and word was it may be FUBAR for quite a while.

No email, no intranet (including all the recently transferred centralised "library" documents), no internet (no OUTERS!!!), no other critical systems either (SAP, SAM, etc), even VOIP desk phones (thank god for mobiles...).

Someone is in deep poo-poo...... :?

It will be interesting to see the outcome when I am back on site next week. ..

Just invented the cookmate, pole that hammers in to ground, swivel top with a support for cast iron frypan self levelling (cause it hangs on chains) and height adjustable above camp fire.
Gunna take the boys bush tomorrow and cook lunch on it um, because.

Maybe I am not the inventor, in fact probably 3567 people have done this before but I am fanging to test it and add it to my overweight car whenever I go away
