Hi All
I'm looking for a Diesel tourer and some tracks. Not a tuff truck. Today I looked at a 1985 Toyota HJ60 2H (aftermarket turbo set at 5psi) 5 speed. 2inch body and shackle lift. 280k on the clock with ARB front and rear lockers. He has had it this way for the last 5 years when he bought it. Used as a Horse float tower. I saw that the main seal was dripping (he said he just had it fixxed lol) and that the injector pump was wet with Diesel though I didn't see any dripping or spraying. Some rust but didn't look major. The rest of the driveline and truck looked tidy. The paint is crows foot all over bad. The lowest the owner will go is around $5500. My thoughts are that this is a bit high.
I didn't see any smoke save a pinch on a cold start up. Didn't smoke at all driving.
I'm thinking that the ARB lockers are worth a bit but wondering if I can find a better deal these days. Any thoughts?? Obviously without looking, one can't have a magic wand but I've not owned one of these before so I'm curious if this sounds like a fair deal.
Cheers

I would keep looking, to rebuild the injector pump you are looking in the vicinity of $1500.00, to do the rear main the gearbox needs to come out and the sump come off, so it is a pretty labour intensive job.
Search around you will find a few HJ61's out there in reasonable condition, I would rather go a factory turbo that aftermarket set up.
For around the 8k mark you should be able to pick up a later model sahara that has all the creature comforts, and is in reasonable condition.
If the paint is all crows foot it sould seem someone has done a really doggy job painting it, (what rust is it hiding) makes me wonder what other doggy work has been done, which is not a good thing on an aftermarket turbo. There is nothing wrong with aftermarket turbo set ups as long as they have been maintained and tuned properly. If they haven't it could be a very expensive process!
Maybe you could go to a 80 series with a 1HZ? |

Mate tell him he's dreaming! If the budget can stretch a little further i would be looking for A 1hz powered 80 series. I owned a HJ61 Sahara, it was a beautiful truck but not the something i would want to tour in. Once the 60 series cruisers started rusting they never stopped. So if you are still looking for a 60 keep an eye on the rust

I actually thought that price sounded ok! I would get it checked over by a diesle mechanic and findout what you are up for for the reco pump, rear main seal and a turbo tune up. |
